Do most travelers tip hotel housekeepers?

Doesn’t look like it.

Primary data was hard to find, but Michael Lynn, associate professor at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, collects his own data on this sort of thing and he estimates that about 30% of U.S. hotel guests leave tips for U.S. hotel housekeepers. (What I can’t find out about Lynn’s data is whether the 30% figure is self-reported by guests or reported by the hotel housekeepers – the former would have an incentive to exaggerate UP while the latter would have an incentive to exaggerate DOWN).

Bjorn Hanson, a professor at NYU’s Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management, basically agrees.

How much of a tip should you leave? There are plenty of sites offering advice on the proper amount. However, given that most leave nothing, I would think anything would be appreciated.
